CHAPTER SEVEN

A KNOCK SOUNDED on the door to Micah’s office Monday afternoon. He’d already had a difficult weekend between meeting with his mom and going to see his dad the next day. His dad was a shadow of the strong, commanding man he’d once been. The change had come as a shock and made him realize that though he might not have agreed with the way they’d raised him, he’d been right to come home and try to make peace with the parts of his childhood that had been difficult. That included his parents.

“Come in.”

The door opened, and Lia peeked in, a look of uncertainty on her face.

He motioned her inside. “Do you know?”

“Know what?” She slid into the room and perched on one of the chairs in front of his desk, looking like she might like to get up and take flight.

“Sassy, the baby who has pertussis, is being released today.”

“That’s great,” she started, only to stop when he held up his hand.

“It’s good that she’s better, but there are a couple of reports that other area hospitals have seen some cases over the weekend. One of them is a neighbor of Sassy’s family.”

Her eyes closed before reopening. “God. I was hoping it was going to be confined to the two families who got together.”

“So did I.” He picked up a pencil and tapped the eraser end on a map on his desk. “The other cases don’t appear to have any ties to the families. But there are always grocery stores or any number of places where a cough can cause an outbreak.”

“If this gains speed...”

“I know. Which is why I think we need to prioritize getting some of these posters up. How busy are you today and tomorrow?”

“I have a surgery and a couple of consults to do tomorrow morning, but nothing urgent. I was going to head to the ER after that and pitch in where I could.”

“Do you have time to talk about the design? You always did have a flair for putting things like that onto paper.”

“Me?” Her voice squeaked in a way that made him smile.

She liked to sketch, and she was good. Micah remembered sitting beside her on the couch while she doodled on a pad. Sometimes the drawings were of things they’d seen that day. Sometimes they were musculature contained within the human body. And sometimes they were things as simple as the fire in the fireplace.

“Yes. You.” He hesitated, not sure he should say anything about Thursday night. “It looked like you and Avery had fun at Gantry’s.”

“We did. Did you and your mom have a productive talk?”

He leaned back in his chair and looked at her. “I don’t know about productive. But I think we made a little bit of progress. And I saw my dad.”

“How did that go?”

“I’m not quite sure. But we’ll see where it leads.” He glanced at her. “Let’s talk about making a mockup that we can take to Arnie. Can we work on that today?”

“Surely the hospital can hire someone for that part?”

Micah lifted his brows.
